Off-Form Lamp (OFL) intentionally introduces unique and non-functional elements into Japanese design, which is often regarded as simple, functional, and nearly perfect. By slightly disrupting this refined formal language, the project reveals playfulness and creates a product with character that challenges established aesthetic norms.

Washi paper is valued worldwide for its sustainability, lightweight, strength, and adaptability, and it has a history of approximately 1,400 years. However, traditional washi craftsmanship is becoming increasingly difficult to sustain.

OFL series makes washi more accessible by combining traditionally handmade washi with digital modelling and 3D printing, the project lowers the technical barrier to working with the material while reframing tradition for the present. So it reintroduces Washi's potential to a global design context, encouraging new makers and future possibilities.
