Shelving Clamps
London, 2024
Beech, Oak, and Pine Wood, Polyurethane Foam
Shelving Clamps are wooden clamps designed to hold a foam as a shelf. The clamps can also accommodate alternative materials, for example, wooden boards, metal plates, or glass panels. The uncertainty of using foam as a shelf top is the main concept of the product. This uncommon material choice encourages people to rethink utility and materiality. The clamps can be assembled by hand, as they contain no glue. All wooden components are made from workshop offcuts.
Foam was chosen as the shelf surface partly because it can act as cushioning during delivery, eliminating the need for additional protective materials such as bubble wrap. The foam wraps around the clamp components to protect them from damage. Although this packaging approach contrasts with flat-pack design, it offers different advantages.
Users are not required to use foam as the shelf surface. It can be replaced with other materials based on personal preference, and the clamps may also be adapted for uses beyond shelving.
